In an ironic turn of events, there has recently been an upswing in the number of established online companies launching print magazines.
It finally seems that companies are acknowledging the benefits of integrated advertising campaigns, incorporating print as well as online and other media. The fact that what have previously been exclusively online companies are getting involved in producing print publications clearly shows that print still has a lot of influence and is very much here to stay.
Online companies who have already or are about to launch print publications include:
Airbnb.com – this website is aimed at people looking for lodgings. They launched a quarterly magazine called Pineapple in December 2014, aiming “to explore our fundamental values; sharing, community and belonging”.
CNET.com – a twenty year old internet site that reviews consumer electronic goods, this company also launched a quarterly magazine e at the end of last year. They say that “while others are running away from print, we’re embracing it to do what we’ve always done – tell stories in fun and compelling new ways”.
Dogster.com and Catster.com – these websites started ten years ago but are about to launch bi-monthly print magazines in February and March 2015 respectively. Cute pictures of dogs and cats are now available in hard copy versions!
